Inspiring independence and growth in a nurturing environment
Reception
At Edullect Academy, our Reception class (for 5-year-olds) follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, forming the bridge between Nursery and Key Stage 1. It provides the foundation for future learning by blending structured teaching with play-based exploration, all within a nurturing and stimulating environment.
What Your Child Will Learn
The EYFS framework for Reception continues to focus on the seven key areas of learning, with growing emphasis on early reading, writing, and maths:
Prime Areas
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Specific Areas
- Literacy (phonics, early writing)
- Mathematics (number, shape, space, and measure)
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Our Reception curriculum is designed to prepare children for Year 1 while respecting their developmental needs and encouraging joyful learning.
Faith Curriculum
In Reception, children begin to build on their early foundations with a more structured approach, while still embracing the playful and visual methods of early years learning, guided by the Safar Academy Reception programme.
As part of our inclusive approach, Edullect Academy offers alternative learning opportunities for pupils of other or no faith.
Focus Areas:
- Arabic Literacy Foundations: Recognising, tracing, and beginning to write Arabic letters
- Qur’an & Tajweed: Introduction Learning to recite basic surahs (e.g. Al-Falaq, An-Nas) with correct pronunciation
- Daily Duas and Islamic Etiquette: Memorising short duas and practicing good manners (e.g. eating etiquettes, using the right hand, saying Alhamdulillah)
- Seerah & Prophets: Exploring the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and key events through interactive stories
- Islamic Themes & Values: Topics like Allah’s creation, kindness, truthfulness, and thankfulness taught through discussion and practical activities
These lessons lay the spiritual and moral groundwork for future learning, helping young children develop a strong Islamic identity in a caring and age-appropriate setting.
How We Deliver the Curriculum
We offer a rich, balanced programme through:
- Short, focused teaching sessions (e.g., phonics, number work, group literacy activities)
- Child-initiated learning through continuous provision and structured play
- Cross-curricular themes that link learning across subjects in creative and meaningful ways
- Outdoor and indoor learning environments that stimulate curiosity and independence
- Guided group work and 1:1 support to extend and scaffold learning
Assessment and Progress Tracking
We assess each child holistically to understand their achievements and support their next steps:
- Ongoing Observations – Teachers track learning throughout the day, capturing key moments and progress
- EYFS Profile Assessment – At the end of Reception, children are assessed against the 17 Early Learning Goals (ELGs) across all seven areas
- Learning Journals – Digital or physical journals show each child’s journey with photos, work samples, and teacher comments
- Parent Consultations – Regular feedback and meetings ensure you’re informed and involved in your child’s development
Supporting Individual Growth
At Edullect Academy, every child is known, supported, and challenged at their own level. Our team:
- Differentiates learning to meet diverse needs
- Monitors progress closely through termly reviews
- Provides early interventions if needed
- Fosters confidence, independence, and a love for learning
Reception: A Year of Big Steps
Reception at Edullect Academy is a time of discovery, growth, and exciting learning. We build the foundations not just for Year 1—but for a lifetime of success.
Our Curriculum Long-Term Plan
At Edullect Academy, a Long-Term Plan is an overview that outlines what children will be learning across the academic year—from Nursery through to Year 6. It maps out the key topics, themes, and subject areas taught each term and helps ensure a well-sequenced, balanced, and purposeful curriculum.
Our Long-Term Plans provide parents with a clear picture of:
- What will be taught in each subject and term
- How learning will be delivered through a mix of structured lessons, practical activities, and enrichment experiences
- How the curriculum links across subjects to build skills, knowledge, and understanding over time
Sharing these plans allows families to stay informed, support learning at home, and understand the journey their child is on throughout the year.
